God’s Word Brings Healing for Victims of Natural Disasters

From Houston to Mexico and beyond, Scripture is a comfort in crisis.

Millions around the world are still grappling to recover from recent disasters. From Hurricane Harvey in Houston and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, to the earthquakes in Mexico, to the mudslides in Sierra Leone, to the victims of wildfires in California, these hurting people need the hope and comfort of God’s Word more than ever. And our caring financial partners are helping American Bible Society be there for them in their time of need.

Often, people who are traumatized by disasters feel like God is angry with them. That’s why it’s so crucial for us to reach them quickly. With the help of our financial partners, American Bible Society is providing Scripture, humanitarian aid, and trauma healing to victims of recent natural disasters and wars, worldwide.

Kevin Spivey saw the destruction — and hope — first-hand in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey as he helped distribute clothing and Bibles to hurricane survivors. “Bibles were next to the clothes distribution,” he said. “And in that same line a sign, ‘Free Bibles and Prayer.’ We ended up having prayer and worship nights every Tuesday and Thursday. The Spirit of God was just moving. The Bibles gave people hope again.”

While there was an urgent need in these devastated areas for humanitarian aid, such as food, water and basic building materials to provide shelter, communities are also still in need of hope and a sense of resilience. “The Word of God will play a key role in the rebuilding process that is starting now,” East Caribbean Bible Society General Secretary Owen Williams says.

While physical needs are being met, American Bible Society is helping with spiritual and emotional needs. We’re coordinating a vast response through our own Trauma Healing team and many other partners. “We will be on the ground in the hardest hit places in the months to come to help the Church respond with the hope of God’s Word to the deep grief and loss in these regions,” shares Andrew Hood, American Bible Society’s Managing Director of Mission Trauma Healing.

The generosity of American Bible Society’s financial partners helps bring the Word of God to these people who have lost so much. They encourage Christians to persevere and help reach people in need with the Gospel!

Thanks to the support of our faithful financial partners, American Bible Society has been engaging people with the life-changing message of God’s Word for more than 200 years.

Help us share God's Word where needed most.
