“We have a God who loves us!” says a young girl at the orphanage

Swapna, a 13-year-old girl with a big smile, is one in a million … actually, one in about 8 million. That’s the number of children in her homeland of India estimated to be homeless.

India has one of the largest populations of orphaned and abandoned children in the world, and Swapna is one of those hurting boys and girls. “I came to this orphanage at the age of 4,” she shares. “My life was full of fear … as my father [beat] my mother every day.”

At the orphanage, Swapna received a New Testament of her very own. In the pages of Scripture, she learned about her Heavenly Father who loved her and who would never leave her. “One fine day I got a New Testament … as I read this, my life changed,” she recalls. “I came to know that we have a God who loves us!”

Eight-year-old Laxmi also found out about God through Scripture. “Scripture provided by the Bible Society is our real strength and hope,” she says.

Another orphan named Suresh agrees, saying, “The Bible given by the Bible Society is my real companion and strength.”

The Bible Society has helped impact 40,000 orphans and at-risk children like these with Scripture. We take God’s command to heart to “take care of orphans and widows” (James 1:27, GNT), and we are blessed to place God’s Word in the hands and hearts of desperate children.

Thanks to the support of our faithful financial partners, American Bible Society has been engaging people with the life-changing message of God’s Word for more than 200 years.

Help us share God's Word where needed most.
