To say that I’m a job-hopper would be an understatement. To say that I’m a classic dreamer and idealist couldn’t be more true. But this is who I am. This is how I’m wired—as one who is often caught gazing at the grass on the other side and pondering, “what if."

After hopping the proverbial fence multiple times, I’ve found the grass to be a similar color. It usually appears brighter from a distance. But once I’m standing in it, the color fades, reality sets in and the cycle continues. The charm of a new relationship or job often clouds my vision to what my day-to-day reality ultimately looks like.

After reaching out and doing many of the things I’ve dreamed of doing, I can say that almost any path is what I make of it. The bottom line is: where do I find my contentment?

I wonder, when I’m caught gazing to the “other side,” if I’m actually struggling with contentment. For years, I've labeled my idealistic ways as adventurous or following my dreams. But the older I get, the more I realize that my craving for more can only be satisfied through Christ.

I’m not saying that contentment in God means staying put when it’s time to move on. I’m saying that when our identity is found in Christ, we don’t have to look to a new job or new relationship or more money to fulfill us. In the Bible, I have found encouragement from Paul, when he states:

I have learned to be satisfied with what I have…I am content, whether I am full or hungry, whether I have too much or too little. I have the strength to face all conditions by the power that Christ gives me (Philippians 4:11b-13, GNTD).

If you’re struggling with being content and present where you are, you can fix your eyes on Jesus. These three Bible verses will get you started:

  1. Colossians 3:1-2 (GNTD)
You have been raised to life with Christ, so set your hearts on the things that are in heaven, where Christ sits on his throne at the right side of God. Keep your minds fixed on things there, not on things here on earth.
  2. Psalm 16:11 (GNTD)
You will show me the path that leads to life; your presence fills me with joy and brings me pleasure forever.
  3. Matthew 6:33 (GNTD)
Instead, be concerned above everything else with the Kingdom of God and with what he requires of you, and he will provide you with all these other things.
