I remember Thanksgiving as a child—standing around the dining room table with a pen and paper, furiously writing what I was thankful for that year (the faster I wrote, the faster I could eat my aunt’s homemade Thanksgiving rolls). Many of the things I was thankful for then are still on my list today—my parents, my sister, a place to call home.

But other things have changed. Instead of being thankful for my own room, I’m thankful for a cozy apartment with a great roommate. I used to write about how grateful I was for my teachers and an opportunity to receive an education. Now I give thanks that I can use the knowledge that so many wonderful teachers instilled in me.

In years to come, I know that my Thanksgiving list will continue to change. One year, I might not have a job to give thanks for. Eventually, I know that my parents will no longer head the Thanksgiving table. But no matter what changes, Scripture reminds me of great, beautiful, eternal truths that I can be thankful for no matter what is going on in my own life.

Here are just a few of those truths, which I will be writing down at my Thanksgiving table this year—and clinging to for years to come.

  1. God's love is eternal.
"He alone performs great miracles; his love is eternal. By his wisdom he made the heavens; his love is eternal; he built the earth on the deep waters; his love is eternal. He made the sun and the moon; his love is eternal; the sun to rule over the day; his love is eternal;the moon and the stars to rule over the night; his love is eternal.” — Psalm 136:4-9, GNTD
  2. Jesus is preparing a place for us to be with him.
“Do not be worried and upset,” Jesus told them. “Believe in God and believe also in me. There are many rooms in my Father's house, and I am going to prepare a place for you. I would not tell you this if it were not so. And after I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to myself, so that you will be where I am." — John 14:1-3, GNTD
  3. God will be faithful to us.
"For God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.” — Hebrews 13:5b, GNTD
  4. Who Jesus is doesn’t change.
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” — Hebrews 13:8, GNTD
  5. Nothing can separate us from the love of Jesus.
"For I am certain that nothing can separate us from his love: neither death nor life, neither angels nor other heavenly rulers or powers, neither the present nor the future, neither the world above nor the world below—there is nothing in all creation that will ever be able to separate us from the love of God which is ours through Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 8:38, 39, GNTD
  6. I don’t need to worry.
"Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God's peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.” —Philippians 4:6, 7, GNTD
  7. God loves justice.
“The Lord has told us what is good. What he requires of us is this: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God.” —Micah 6:8, GNTD
