As you drop your mail on the kitchen table, an envelope falls from the stack and hits the floor. "Minimum payment past due," it reads, printed in red ink. You pick up the envelope begin to tear it open, but decide to drop it back on your mail pile instead. I'm not dealing with this now, you think to yourself.

You know exactly who sent the bill and how much money you owe. But with your credit card debt growing—and your bank account nearly empty—you begin to feel anxious and afraid. Will I ever be able to pay these bills on time? Will I ever get myself out of this hole? …Maybe next month.

To calm your fear, you start conjuring up ways to get your finances back on track. You download all the best money-management apps in the app store. You call your old college friend who works in finance and ask for advice. You sift through your budget and highlight the areas where you spend too much. You gather your unneeded valuables and post them on eBay.

But even after you've run yourself ragged trying to find a solution, you still feel anxious about your growing debt. And you still have no idea how you'll pay your past-due bill.

In these moments, you can respond by meditating on promises of peace and hope found in God's Word. These four Bible verses will get you started:

Isaiah 26:3 (GNTD)

You, Lord, give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you.

Nahum 1:7 (GNTD)

The Lord is good; he protects his people in times of trouble; he takes care of those who turn to him.

Isaiah 58:11 (GNTD)

And I will always guide you and satisfy you with good things. I will keep you strong and well. You will be like a garden that has plenty of water, like a spring of water that never goes dry.

Philippians 4:6-7 (GNTD)

Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God's peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.
