As we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who dedicated his life to seeking justice, we can also remember God’s deep commitment to justice throughout the Bible. Here are 7 (of many) places in the Bible that talk about the importance of justice.

  1. God instructed the Israelites to set up fair courts.
    Deuteronomy 16.18 (GNT):

Appoint judges and other officials in every town that the Lord your God gives you. These men are to judge the people impartially.

  2. Justice is a part of worship.

    Amos 5.23, 24 (GNT):
Stop your noisy songs; I do not want to listen to your harps. Instead, let justice flow like a stream, and righteousness like a river that never goes dry.

  3. We depend on God’s justice.

    Psalm 140.12 (GNT):

Lord, I know that you defend the cause of the poor and the rights of the needy.

  4. Knowing more about justice comes from knowing God.

    Proverbs 28.5 (GNT):

Evil people do not know what justice is, but those who worship the Lord understand it well.

  5. God will bring his people justice.
    Luke 18. 7, 8b (GNT):

Now, will God not judge in favor of his own people who cry to him day and night for help? Will he be slow to help them? I tell you, he will judge in their favor and do it quickly.

  6. God’s justice protects us.

    Ephesians 6.14 (CEV)

Be ready! Let the truth be like a belt around your waist, and let God's justice protect you like armor.

  7. Jesus will rule with justice.
    Hebrews 1.8 (GNT)

About the Son, however, God said:

“Your kingdom, O God, will last forever and ever!

You rule over your people with justice".
