You anxiously turn the doorknob, hoping that things will be better today.

The door now open, you notice the half-eaten food, the water that is so hard to swallow. You study your loved one's face, looking for signs of vitality in sallow skin. You struggle to maintain your smile as you lean down toward the bed to give a kiss.

Have you ever watched a loved one battle sickness?

Whether you experienced this yesterday or ten years ago—whether you know they'll get better or you're afraid they won't—seeing someone close to you suffer is almost unbearable. You feel helpless as you wrack your brain with ways to somehow make it better. And you feel guilty that you're healthy while they're suffering.

If you're dealing with the sickness of a loved one, you don't have to face it alone. You can cry out to God, tell him your worries and find hope in his words of peace.

These four Psalms will get you started:

Psalm 46:1 (GNTD)

God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.

Psalm 23:4-5, 6 (GNTD)

Even if I go through the deepest darkness, I will not be afraid, Lord, for you are with me. Your shepherd's rod and staff protect me. I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life; and your house will be my home as long as I live.

Psalm 91:1-4 (GNTD)

Whoever goes to the Lord for safety, whoever remains under the protection of the Almighty, can say to him, "You are my defender and protector. You are my God; in you I trust." He will keep you safe from all hidden dangers and from all deadly diseases. He will cover you with his wings; you will be safe in his care; his faithfulness will protect and defend you.

Psalm 16:5-8 (GNTD)

You, Lord, are all I have, and you give me all I need; my future is in your hands.  How wonderful are your gifts to me; how good they are!  I praise the Lord, because he guides me, and in the night my conscience warns me.  I am always aware of the Lord's presence; he is near, and nothing can shake me.
