How You Can Help People Hurting After Hurricanes Harvey and Irma

We lift prayers of hope up to God and offer support to our friends in the paths of hurricanes

Thousands of people are suffering in the wake of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They may be wondering, “How can I go back to normal after this? Where will I live? How can I get back what I lost? Who will grieve alongside me?”

Beginning on August 25th, Hurricane Harvey tore through southeast Texas, leaving battered homes and flooded streets in its wake. Thousands of Texans woke up to howling winds and torrential rain. Many sought shelter in bathtubs and on rooftops as the walls of their homes caved in and they watched their sofas, TVs, and family heirlooms float through deep, mucky waters.

Authorities estimate that almost 500,000 Texas residents will rely on some sort of disaster assistance in the coming months. And more than 40 Texans perished in the storm.

Just a few days later, Hurricane Irma began to ravage the Caribbean. It caused catastrophic damage to islands in the region, including Puerto Rico, Antigua and Barbuda, and the Virgin Islands. Homes and businesses were destroyed in its wake and over a million people were left without power. At least 27 people have been confirmed dead.

On September 4th, a state of emergency was declared in Florida. More than 6,500,000 residents fled their homes—the largest evacuation in Florida’s history. Another 540,000 people were ordered to evacuate the Georgia coast. On September 10th, Hurricane Irma blasted through Florida, causing millions of dollars in damage and claiming at least four lives.

Our friends in the southern U.S. and the Caribbean are hurting. But you can help bring them hope.

Will you help us bring God’s Word to hurricane victims?

As people return to homes decimated by the storm, they trudge through the remains of their possessions. Their Bibles lie open on the floor, water-stained, pages torn out from the spine, years of notes bleeding through the pages, inscrutable.

American Bible Society is rushing Bibles to hurricane victims now. You can help hurting people find comfort and hope in God’s Word during one of the most desperate times in their lives. Help us bring God's Word to victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.

Pray with us

You can also take some time to pray with us for survivors.

The Bible tells us that God hears—and answers—our prayers when we pray for anything according to God’s will (Psalm 5:3, 1John 5:14). And Jesus reminds us that our prayers are powerful (Mark 11:24).

Natural disasters like Hurricanes Harvey and Irma uproot homes and displace communities. Often, the most disadvantaged people—those who can’t afford home and car insurance—are left struggling to recover well after the storm recedes.

If you’re feeling heartbroken for people hurt by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, take a moment to read through Psalm 121, which reminds us of God’s comfort and protection. As you read, pray for the safety of those who are struggling—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—in the wake these hurricanes.

I look to the hills!
Where will I find help?
It will come from the LORD,
who created the heavens
and the earth.

The LORD is your protector,
and he won’t go to sleep
or let you stumble.
The protector of Israel
doesn’t doze
or ever get drowsy.

The LORD is your protector,
there at your right side
to shade you from the sun.
You won’t be harmed
by the sun during the day
or by the moon at night.

The LORD will protect you
and keep you safe
from all dangers.

The LORD will protect you
now and always
wherever you go.
