Gifts Do “Double Work”

As a young man, Sam couldn't tithe. Nevertheless, he asked the Lord to use him to serve others.

“Everything comes from the Lord,” Sam Boring said. Despite serious hardships, Sam and his wife, Thelma, unstintingly shared what they had. Thelma, for instance, tithed “every penny she ever made,” said Sam.

As a young man, Sam couldn’t tithe. Nevertheless, he asked the Lord to use him to serve others. His prayer was answered.

He worked as an accountant, and then served in World War II in the Navy for eight years. Later, he joined the Air Force, and worked in air and sea rescue work. An accident ended his military career, and the injury kept him from working?a financial hardship for the family. Over time, however, their finances improved; and when the Borings received an appeal to support an American Bible Society project 25 years ago through a gift annuity, they accepted.

Sam was delighted that he and his wife’s money did “double work,” as he put it, helping spread God’s Word, “as well as taking care of their needs.”
