Urgent: Pray as Deadly Earthquakes Hit Puerto Rico

Bible-based trauma healing seeks to bring God’s healing to hurting Puerto Ricans

Puerto Rico has been hit again. Still rebuilding from the widespread damage caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017, the small Caribbean nation is facing yet another crisis.

After a week of smaller quakes, on January 7, 2020, Puerto Ricans were awakened by the island’s worst earthquake in a century. The 6.4 magnitude earthquake knocked out power and collapsed homes. Tragically, one man was killed, several were injured, and more than 300 people are homeless.

Days after the quake, aftershocks continue to shake the island, prompting Puerto Ricans to sleep outside to avoid more building collapses. Many are still without electricity.

Puerto Ricans are afraid. They fear more earthquakes, more damage, and an uncertain future.

Restoring Hope for Puerto Ricans

In this moment of indescribable fear and pain, the Bible Society of Puerto Rico and local churches are responding with the healing found in God’s Word.

Together they’ve introduced Bible-based trauma healing. Trauma healing ministry is designed to help people take their pain to Jesus the healer. Using Scripture, it reminds them that they are not alone in their suffering, but Jesus walks with them.

Since Nov. 2018, 121 Puerto Rican church leaders have been trained to help hurting people in their communities by leading small groups. More than 460 people have experienced the peace of Jesus through healing groups.

But the need is great. On the heels of this recent tragedy there is an even greater urgency to reach more people with the healing power of God’s Word. Beginning on January 18, the Bible Society will respond in the southern part of the island with a special curriculum designed for use with disaster victims.

The Bible Society is asking for prayer to share God’s Word with as many as possible and to see hope restored to the people of Puerto Rico. Will you pray?

Pray for:

  • The people. As Puerto Ricans suffer loss, pray that God will replace fear with hope. Ask God to comfort those who are hurting.
  • Aid. Pray for humanitarian aid to pour in as parts of the island are still without electricity and running water.
  • The Bible Society and churches. Pray for wisdom and strength as they serve affected communities with trauma healing ministry. Pray for more trauma healing facilitators to be trained and more finances to cover program materials and meeting logistics.

Give

You can provide the hope of God’s Word along with other relief materials to Puerto Ricans suffering from the trauma of the deadly earthquake. Will you help them experience God’s love in action?
