Urgent: Pray as Military Suicide on the Rise

U.S. Soldiers in desperate need of God’s hope

In 2018, 541 military service members committed suicide. The majority were 30 years old or younger. This is an all-time high since the Defense Department began collecting this data shortly after 9/11.

Our hearts are grieving. We cannot imagine the pain that many people are experiencing by not having their loved ones here. We believe God wants to reverse this trend of military suicide and heal lives.

Caring for the Soul of our Soldiers

We are grateful for the 3,000 military chaplains caring for the souls of U.S. Soldiers. Military chaplains provide religious and pastoral care to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Marines. They host Bible studies and lead worship in chapels. Daily, they support our U.S. Service members, their families, and other authorized personnel.

But they cannot do this work alone. They need your prayers. We invite you to join military chaplains across America as they pray for active-duty military to experience God’s peace.

“Even one life lost to suicide is one too many … Please take up this prayer challenge to ask for God’s strength and wisdom, as we seek to provide help, hope, and healing to those in our ranks who are struggling with sustaining a sense of meaning and purpose in their lives,” says Thomas L. Solhjem, Chaplain (Major General) U.S. Army Chief of Chaplains.

3 Ways to Pray:

  • Pray for healing for Soldiers. Ask God to heal and set free those afflicted with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other mental health conditions.
  • “Your words and your deeds bring life to everyone, including me. Please make me healthy and strong again.” Isaiah 38:16

  • Pray for wisdom for chaplains. Ask God to guide chaplains as they counsel and support Soldiers who are hurting. Pray that they will be a positive influence and godly witness.

“The Lord says, “I will teach you the way you should go; I will instruct you and advise you.” Psalm 32:8

  • Pray for increased support for Soldiers. Pray that God will provide all resources needed to continue to support active-duty military and their families. Ask God to increase capacity for professional counseling, medical care, and other help as needed.

“I pray that God will take care of all your needs with the wonderful blessings that come from Christ Jesus!” Philippians 4:19
