2020: The Year in Review from State of the Bible
Pray for an increase in Scripture engagement across America
Thank you for praying! Each month as we shared a new chapter from the State of the Bible 2020 report, we were encouraged by this one simple truth: many Americans turned to the Bible in 2020.
In a year marked by unrest and unbelief, the Bible brought us closer to God and to one another. Along with this wonderful news, the final chapter of State of the Bible 2020 reveals more top findings from 2020. Here are three of the top ten stories of 2020:
- 71 Million Scripture Engaged Adults. In January, we estimated that 70.9 million American adults were consistently interacting with the Bible and allowing its message to shape their choices and even transform their relationships. Never in the ten-year history of State of the Bible have we found such a large population of Americans deeply engaging with God’s Word.
- Millennials Lead the Way. The Millennial generation (aged 21-35) is leading all the other generational groups in Scripture engagement.
- The Bible, Faith, and Covid-19. There is no doubt that COVID-19 has been hard on everyone in 2020. Still, many Americans found both comfort and strength in the Bible and their connection to the Church. Nearly half of Practicing Christians (47%) strongly agreed that the COVID-19 pandemic had strengthened their faith, compared to only 13% of Non-Practicing Christians.

How You Can Pray?
“This research tells us clearly that an individual’s relationship with the Bible is the single greatest influence on her or his overall spiritual health. Nothing else comes close” says John Farquhar Plake, Ph.D., Director of Ministry Intelligence at American Bible Society. Americans need the life-giving messages found in God’s Word. Scripture offers hope, peace, and encouragement, something we can all use in these especially trying times.
So, we’re asking you to pray. Pray for Americans to turn to the Bible for answers. Pray that they’ll explore Scripture, read its truths, and invite its influence in their lives. Will you pray?
Let’s Pray Together
God thank you for this research that highlights the importance of Scripture in our lives. We pray Americans will be drawn to the Bible and want to discover the treasure inside. We also pray for a spirit of innovation for churches and organizations creating new tools to share your Word.
