3 Ways to Pray When Faced with Fear

In moments of fear we turn to God’s Word for reassurance

There I was sitting on the train, when I got the news, “Presumptive Positive Case of Coronavirus in NJ.” I combed through the email frantically searching for the location of this alarming discovery. Could it be …?

Yep, the coronavirus was in my town.

With every notification – the school, the township, the local news, social media – fear began to mount. Do I know the person? Does he live near me? Will I have to be quarantined? I became overwhelmed.

Fear is crippling. It seeks to control your life and make you feel powerless. Many of us fall victim to fear letting it dictate our emotions, our actions, even our sleep.

But the Bible reminds us that we shouldn’t be controlled by fear, instead we should place our hope and trust in God.

“Do not be afraid – I am with you! I am your God – let nothing terrify you! I will make you strong and help you; I will protect you and save you.” Isaiah 41:10

Tackling Fear with Faith

We fear things that are dangerous, painful, or threatening. We fear death, sickness, the possibility of losing someone or something. But we can choose to reject the influence of fear by replacing it with God’s truth. God loves us. We can trust him to help us in uncertain and scary moments.

If you’re struggling with fear, here are three ways you can pray as you reflect on truths found in his Word:

1.God, replace my fear with your peace.

“Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.” – John 14:27

2.God, I trust you with my life. You are in control; you know what’s best for me.

“When I am afraid, O Lord Almighty, I put my trust in you.” – Psalm 56:3

3.God, free me from fear by showing me how much you love me.

“There is no fear in love; perfect love drives out all fear. So then, love has not been made perfect in anyone who is afraid, because fear has to do with punishment.” – 1 John 4:18
