A Full Bible for Togo’s Lamba People

Pray that the Lamba people of Togo will have their first Bible by 2021

The Lamba people live primarily in Northern Togo. They enjoy a life of weaving, basketry, pottery, and blacksmithing. Lamba people also worship the spirit of deceased relatives. They call on the name of their ancestors to bless their house, protect them, or help them in times of need.

We are praying instead that Togo’s Lamba people will call on the name of the Lord God Almighty. We pray that they will turn to God for all that they need.

For the Lamba people to discover God’s amazing love, they need the full Bible in Lama, their heart language.

Seeking the Kingdom of God in Togo

Having a Bible in Lama will help the Lamba people grow in their knowledge of God’s love for them, replacing their dependence on ancestry worship.

Thankfully, work to translate the Bible into Lama is well underway!

The Lama New Testament was published in 1995. In 2000, several Lama-speaking churches founded the Christian Association for the Promotion of the Lama Language. They identified translators who could work on the Old Testament. Bible Society of Togo helps supports this work of Bible translation by training the translators and equipping the church with literacy programs for Lamba people who cannot read.

To date, the translation team has completed 83 percent of the Lama Old Testament, but we need your prayers to help see this project to completion, which is expected for December 2021. The final stretch can often be the hardest. Please help us pray against all the challenges that may arise like delays, sickness, or trouble with the technology. Let’s believe that the Lamba people will have a full Bible soon so they can experience its messages of hope.

Let’s Pray Together

God, thank you for all those involved in the translation of the Lama Bible. We pray that you will guide, strengthen, and encourage them. We also pray that as the Lamba people of Togo read the Bible that they will turn from their people’s ancient beliefs, turning to the gospel of Jesus instead.
