How many times have you heard the word “peace” in the past month?

Ads on your social media pages claim to help you achieve inner peace through meditation, therapy, or some magical new supplement.

Global leaders call for peace in countries like Ukraine, Syria, and Ethiopia.

Exhausted coworkers share that they’re hoping for some peace and quiet on upcoming vacations.

Friends and family send well-intentioned wishes for peace after you receive a difficult diagnosis or lose a loved one.

While peace is something we talk about a lot, it’s not something we often achieve in our daily lives. Instead, feelings of discouragement, anxiety, and discontentment flood our minds.

During his time on earth, Jesus showed us that he understands how difficult it can be to find true peace amid our hectic and unpredictable lives. Many times in the gospel narratives, we see him take a break from his ministry to seek God’s face and spend time with his heavenly Father. He also dedicated time to mediating disagreements between his disciples, modeling for us the importance of peacemaking.

Ultimately, Jesus’s teachings on peace found their fulfilment in his sacrifice for us. By dying on the cross for our sins, Jesus made a way for us to experience true and lasting peace through a restored relationship with God.

Jesus explains this miraculous truth to his disciples shortly before his death and resurrection. He tells them that although they will be scattered, persecuted, and even killed for their faith, he will give them peace through the knowledge of his ultimate victory:

“I have told you this so that you will have peace by being united to me. The world will make you suffer. But be brave! I have defeated the world!”

No matter what the disciples would experience, Jesus told them that his peace would always be with them.

Today, that promise is still true for us. As we live in a world that is broken and so often lacking in peace, we can find true peace in the work of Jesus Christ and his promises to us in Scripture.

You, LORD, give perfect peace

God grants peace by promising to always watch over us.

you alone, O LORD, keep me perfectly safe.

God calls us to strive for peace in our lives and relationships.

You must turn away from evil and do good;
you must strive for peace with all your heart.

1 Peter 3:11 GNT

God promises to provide peace that keeps us safe in union with Jesus Christ.

God’s peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.
