4 Ways to Teach Your Children to Love God’s Word
Use Scripture to teach your children truths they will remember forever
Today, there are many ways you can help your children engage with the Bible.
You can tell your children a simplified version of God’s story. You can encourage your children to take God’s truths back to school. And you can take advantage of resources like the Bible App for Kids or online Bible reading plans for young adults from YouVersion.
But how can you teach your children to love God’s Word?
Scripture is clear that only God can change our hearts and help us love God and obey his commandments. But when it comes to the Bible, parents have an important role to play. By teaching your children the value of God’s Word, you are creating a legacy that will remain with them throughout their lives.
Use these four verses to guide your children in exploring and treasuring God’s Word in their lives.
Show your children how much God values them.
God’s Word is full of verses that communicate the incredible love God has for your children. God cared for them before they were even born. He promises to be a source of help and strength throughout their lives. And, most amazing of all, God sent his own Son to make a way for every person to be called a child of God.
Children are a gift from the LORD;
they are a real blessing.Psalm 127:3 GNT
Teach your children about the blessings that come from obeying God’s commandments.
God’s Word teaches us about the devastating effects of sin. When we disobey God’s law, we often experience suffering and brokenness that can last for generations. You can use the Bible to teach your children that the way to honor God and experience his blessing is to obey his commandments throughout their lives.
Children, it is your Christian duty to obey your parents, for this is the right thing to do. “Respect your father and mother” is the first commandment that has a promise added: “so that all may go well with you, and you may live a long time in the land.”
Ephesians 6:1-3 GNT
Remind your children that the lessons they are learning will help them throughout their lives.
God’s Word is the best compass for your children as they grow and learn more about the world. When life gets difficult, confusing, or overwhelming, God promises to be with them. He tells them that he will give them a hope and a future. Someday, even after they have grown up and started having children and grandchildren of their own, your children will still be able to recall the precious lessons of their childhood.
Teach children how they should live, and they will remember it all their life.
Proverbs 22:6 GNT
Encourage your children with the message of Jesus’s love for them in Scripture.
At the heart of the gospel is Jesus and his eternal love for us. Throughout his ministry, Jesus showed special care for children. And through God’s Word, he invites your children to have a personal relationship with him and to deepen their faith. This is the greatest treasure they can find in Scripture!
Some people brought children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples scolded the people. When Jesus noticed this, he was angry and said to his disciples, “Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I assure you that whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.” Then he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on each of them, and blessed them.
