Leading People into Scripture, 2016

A Look Back to Remember Who We Are

The end of a year is a great time to review what you’ve done. It’s also a chance for evaluation and recommitment. Sometimes a look back can remind you of who you are. That’s true for individual lives, for families, for churches, and even for blogs.

We have worked to make this blog unique. There are many other blogs and web resources about the Bible (including others we’ve created at American Bible Society), but this blog is for leaders. And there are other places you can read about leadership, even church leadership, but this blog is about a specific slice of that.

We write this blog for those who lead others into Bible engagement. You are pastors and teachers, in the trenches of ministry, and we aim to be alert to your needs. So, what are you focusing on as you lead others into Scripture? Here are some major issues and interests we’ve tapped into in the past year.

1. You look for ministry ideas that work.

So, in the past year, we had one pastor describe how he emailed daily Scriptures to his congregation, along with reflections written by church members. Another pastor detailed his “Bible Study for Guys Who Don’t Do Bible Study.”

2. You’re interested in reaching different segments of the population.

Millennials pose significant opportunities and challenges in church ministry these days, so we featured a piece by author Erwin Raphael McManus with insights on that crowd. Our own editor Juan Rojas-Hernandez discussed how lessons learned from Latinos can inform Bible engagement for everyone.

3. You want to find good resources.

In one of our most popular pieces, Peter Edman surveyed the online Bible resources available. We’ve included a few book reviews and even some blogs on art and architecture.

4. You know that Bible engagement changes lives.

And we’re always asking how. When people truly engage with Scripture, it will affect the way they respond to threats of terrorism. It will shape our thinking about race relations and other crucial issues of the day.

If you’re new to this blog, we invite you to browse through our files for pieces that ignite your thinking and inspire your ministry. If you’ve been sampling our wares for a while now, thank you—but maybe there are some write-ups you missed along the way (and some might warrant a second reading).

In any case, we invite you to comment on what you see and let us know the topics you’d like to see in 2017.
