American Bible Society Honors Philadelphia Law Enforcement with New Resource

Dec. 15: Commissioner, Officers Celebrate at National Org.'s Philly HQ

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 12, 2016— A recent report reveals there are an estimated 150,000 police officers in the U.S. with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, and research indicates one-third of active-duty and retired officers struggle with post-traumatic stress, often without realizing it. During the holiday season—a time of year that can be both high in crime and challenging for those suffering from depression and stress disorders—American Bible Society is serving Philadelphia’s finest with a resource to bring them comfort and hope. Strength for the Street is a Bible devotional with stories from Philadelphia’s own police officers and chaplains. Content addresses the officers’ need for strength in a variety of situations: when guilt is overwhelming, when sadness and grief are a struggle and when life seems to lack purpose.

The Bible speaks to every aspect of the human experience—the highs and lows, as well as the triumphs and challenges,” said Roy Peterson, American Bible Society’s president and CEO. “We believe Strength for the Street will provide hope and encouragement to Philadelphia’s 6,100 police officers who sacrifice so much every day. The city of Philadelphia welcomed American Bible Society with open arms, and we want to serve and honor those who keep our city safe.

On Thursday, Dec. 15, American Bible Society will celebrate the launch of Strength for the Street and honor the police chaplains and officers who contributed their stories with an event at its headquarters, featuring Police Commissioner Richard Ross Jr. A reception with the commissioner will precede the program, where Peterson will address local law enforcement.

We are grateful to American Bible Society for providing this resource for our police force,” said Ross. “We hope Strength for the Street will provide our officers peace and comfort as they deal with the stresses and challenges of protecting Philadelphia’s residents.

Media are welcome to attend. Interview opportunities on-site include Peterson and Ross.
