Liana’s Favorite Books: Episode 7

Dr. Liana Lupas escorts you into the court of King Henry VIII during this virtual tour of his Great Bible

In this new episode of “Liana’s Favorite Books,” the esteemed librarian of American Bible Society, Dr. Liana Lupas, takes you back to the infamous reign of King Henry VIII in England. This beautiful Bible was printed in 1539 and is known as the Great Bible.

King Henry wanted all of England’s 9,000 parishes to have a copy of the Bible in English. Thus, the Great Bible was born. Dr. Lupas explains how each parish would not only purchase the Bible, but also a heavy chain to ensure that these expensive Bibles were not stolen from the church. In fact, American Bible Society’s collection of historic Bibles includes two volumes with their security chains still attached!

The title page of this Great Bible also contains beautiful, intricate artwork of King Henry and his court. Dr. Lupas explains some of the fascinating messages and symbols hidden in the illustrations.

We hope you enjoy your visit to the court of King Henry VIII as you explore the Great Bible with Dr. Lupas!
