My Prayers for Baltimore

Together, let us ask God for peace, justice and healing in Baltimore

This week, my wife Rita and I have followed the stories of pain and protest in Baltimore with heavy hearts.

I’ve grieved after reading the story of Freddie Gray and his family. I’ve mourned while watching the footage of buildings burning and riots raging. I’ve rejoiced to hear stories of peaceful protests and the perseverance of so many people in Baltimore to continue to build and improve their city.

But throughout it all, I’ve repeatedly returned to the question: how should I pray for a city of people calling for peace and crying for justice?

In this time of instability, mistrust and fear, I can only turn to Scripture to guide the prayers that I don’t know how to form myself.

The Scriptures tell us that Jesus wept. But they also tell us that Jesus healed. Will you join me in praying for healing and peace?

Father, heal the wounds of deep pain and mistrust that are present in Baltimore today.
“He heals the broken-hearted
and bandages their wounds
.” —Psalm 147:3 (GNTD)

Lord, bring your perfect justice to the city of Baltimore.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set free the oppressed
and announce that the time has come
when the Lord will save his people.”
—Luke 4:18-19 (GNTD)

God, bring peace to the people of Baltimore.
“Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.” —John 14:27 (GNTD)
