Now, teaching Bible stories to children isn’t limited to characters on a flannel board. A new videogame, The Aetherlight: Chronicles of the Resistance, provides a digital, interactive platform for kids to learn about the Bible. The game, which opened to the public with a Founder’s Launch on January 15, shares the biblical narrative through a medium that is native and accessible to a digital generation.

The game was created by Scarlet City Studios, a New Zealand-based partner of American Bible Society that uses digital mediums to tell stories of redemption. As kids identify with the characters and stories in The Aetherlight, they learn the stories of Scripture—from Genesis through the Gospels.

“The Aetherlight exists to connect two worlds: theology with theatrics,” says Tim Cleary, who wrote the story behind the game. “We’re trying to connect young people with the story of Scripture. We want to bring it to life again in a way that touches their felt needs for games, for entertainment and for education.”

The game is coming at a time when Scripture engagement is declining across the country, according to American Bible Society’s State of the Bible research.

“We know that there’s a battle for the hearts and minds of young people today,” says American Bible Society President and CEO Roy Peterson. Capturing the biblical imagination of kids through The Aetherlight is a great tool to help the next generation come to know God’s Word, he explains.

The game has the opportunity to not only introduce youth to the stories of Scripture, but help them apply God’s Word on a regular basis. “We want them to live out a story of faith, hope and love in their everyday life,” Cleary says.
