Prayers of Peace for Charlottesville

Seeking unity in Charlottesville and across our nation

This weekend, protesters and counter-protesters clashed in Charlottesville, VA. According to reports, three people were left dead and dozens were wounded in the aftermath of the violence.

“This weekend, I grieved as I watched the hateful and violent events unfold in Charlottesville,” says American Bible Society President and CEO Roy Peterson. “During these times of pain and unrest, it’s easy to feel hopeless but I would encourage all of us to turn to God’s Word for guidance and healing.”

In the wake of these brutal events, we ask you to come alongside us in prayer. Together, we can pray for peace and unity in Charlottesville and across America.

Together, Our Prayers Are Powerful. Will You Pray with Us?

Acts of hate and violence threaten to stir up even more hate. It can be hard to focus our minds on love and reconciliation. It might feel impossible to muster up the words to ask God to heal hearts across America.

If you’re not sure what to say or how to pray for peace today, join us as we pray through Psalm 85:6-13 together:

Lord, show us how to pray for peace and instill in us a desire for unity. At times, it’s hard to see where there is hope—remind us that there is hope and our hope lies with you.

Will you not revive us again,

that your people may rejoice in you?

Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,

and grant us your salvation.

Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,

for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints;

but let them not turn back to folly.

God, help us to love the people around us well, especially those who are hurting—spiritually, emotionally, and physically—in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville. Teach us how to bring our pain to you so that we can be healed and engage our communities with love and a vision for peace.

Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him,

that glory may dwell in our land.

Steadfast love and faithfulness meet;

righteousness and peace kiss each other.

Faithfulness springs up from the ground,

and righteousness looks down from the sky.

Lord, challenge us to pursue righteousness and unity in our communities. Thank you for being an example of compassion and unconditional love for us. We put our hope for America in you. Amen.

Yes, the Lord will give what is good,

and our land will yield its increase.

Righteousness will go before him

and make his footsteps a way.
