Videogame Helps Youth Immerse Themselves in Stories of Scripture
A new, web-based game answers the call of Christian adults to drive deeper understanding of Scripture among young people
Forty percent of Christian adults find it difficult to teach children about the Bible, according to a recent study from American Bible Society and Harris Poll. The study also reports that more than 50 percent of Christian parents wish their kids read the Bible more often and would use a tool to make Scripture easier to understand (52 percent and 54 percent, respectively).
The announcement of this new research follows the release of The Aetherlight: Chronicles of the Resistance, a web-based gaming platform from Scarlet City Studios and American Bible Society. The game delivers Bible content to teens and pre-teens within a digital, allegorical world where gamers can explore the grand themes and stories of Scripture.
In the past several years, the videogame industry—which earned $23.5 billion in revenue last year—has steadily grown in popularity, predominantly among young people. In more than 60 percent of U.S. households, at least one person plays videogames for three hours or more per week, according to a report released earlier this year.
By playing The Aetherlight, youth can engage with God’s Word while engaging with a popular entertainment medium.
“Americans who are not regularly playing videogames may not recognize the power of this
medium,” says Arthur Satterwhite, senior manager for National Movements Mobilization at
American Bible Society. “For those who regularly engage in this type of play, games are often
viewed as an outlet or safe place and can even be educational, helping young people draw new
parallels via experiential learning within an immersive environment.”
American Bible Society, which has its headquarters in Philadelphia, has been leveraging the technology of the day to deliver Bible resources to people for the last 200 years, from providing Bibles to Pony Express Bibles to sharing Scripture on Facebook. The Aetherlight is just one more way of making the Bible available to those who need it most.
