How to Pray for Mozambique

Let us join hearts and pray for the people of Mozambique

On March 15, 2019, a tropical cyclone struck Mozambique. Cyclone Idai barreled through Mozambique with 100-mile-per-hour winds and torrential rains causing widespread destruction. Beira, the capital of the Sofala Province, was hit the hardest.

The Rev. Valente Tomas Tseco, executive secretary of Bible Society in Mozambique, sent this update:

“Many people have died and many more are injured and displaced. The destruction of buildings and roads is tremendous. The situation is devastating and tragic. It is a huge disaster. The main roads to Beira are cut off. Please help us pray for God’s intervention to save his people and heal the trauma caused by this tragic natural disaster.”

Helping Mozambique

As the flood waters recede, Mozambicans are taking stock of the devastation caused by Cyclone Idai. Structural damage, power outages, thousands displaced, and many lives lost.

Bible Society in Mozambique suffered damage to its warehouse. The roof was torn off by violent winds. Bibles and translation equipment were destroyed.

The people of Mozambique need your prayers. The Bible reminds us that God is present and able to help.

“Listen, Lord to my prayer; hear my cries for help. I call to you in times of trouble, because you answer my prayers.” – Psalm 86:6-7

Pray

Will you join us in crying out to God on behalf of Mozambique?

  • The people. Ask God to comfort Mozambicans who have suffered great loss. Pray for provision, protection, and strength so they can begin to rebuild their lives.
  • Recovery efforts. Pray for all the workers involved in rescue efforts to be strengthened. Pray for generous humanitarian aid to pour into Mozambique from around the world.
  • Sickness and disease. Ask God to prevent any outbreaks of disease such cholera and malaria in survivor camps. Pray for medicine to make its way to those who need it.
  • The Bible Society and churches. Pray for the Bible Society and local churches which also suffered loss. Ask God to encourage them so they can continue to bring the hope of Jesus to everyone in need.
