5 Ways to Pray for America After Capitol Riots

Join us as we pray God’s Word over the U.S. following the Capitol Riots

Watching the unfolding events at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday was heartbreaking. Like me, you probably viewed live footage in shock as scenes of chaos flooded our social media feeds and news outlet channels. We saw throngs move past guarded embankments into one of our nation’s most prestigious landmarks as lawmakers fled in safety.

National voices across the political and religious spectrum joined in agreement condemning this violence. As our country reels in the aftermath of these events that included the loss of five lives, we grieve. We pray. And we continue to place our hope in the One who is able to save.

In these moments of unprecedented division in our nation, we remember the promise of Psalm 119:114, “You are my hiding place and my shield. My hope is based on your Word” (GNT). These events leave us feeling uncertain with so many questions - about the future, unknowns, security, and more. Yet, the Bible instructs us on how to pray. In response to the chaos of these national events, we invite the truth of God’s Word to lead us toward personal holiness and societal transformation. We pray boldly for God’s Word to change us from the inside out. Christ offers us a powerful guide to inform our response to these events through the Lord’s Prayer. We invite you to pour your heart out to the Lord through this prayer that inspires our hope in His Word.

5 Ways to Pray for America:

“‘Our Father in heaven: May your holy name be honored…’” Matthew 6:9 (GNT).

Father, we praise and adore you. You are holy, perfect and true. Where people and politics fail, you remain enthroned on a foundation of pure righteousness and justice. We exalt you as God over all nations, rulers and authorities. We rest in your sovereignty over any events we face in this life.

“May your Kingdom come; may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” Matthew 6:10 (GNT).

Lord God, your person, principles and policies lead us to life. We repent for any way we have abandoned your truth individually or collectively. Establish us in the righteousness that comes through faith in your Word. Lead our national and local leaders in your wisdom and truth. Guide church leaders to be strengthened in bold courage. May our nation see new fruits of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit as we turn to you.

“Give us today the food we need” Matthew 6:11 (GNT).

Thank you God for being our provider. You are both all-loving and all-powerful, willing and able to meet our every need. Forgive us for fearing when we believe everything relies upon us. We ask for your financial, emotional, spiritual and physical blessing for every need this nation faces today.

“Forgive us the wrongs we have done, as we forgive the wrongs that others have done to us” Matthew 6:12 (GNT).

Lord, we repent of sins we have loved more than you. We ask for your forgiveness as a nation for pride, greed and other evils that have captured our affections away from loving you and our neighbor. Cleanse, heal and restore us in the truth of your Word. Lead us forward as a nation in the forgiveness, mercy and compassion of Christ that unites us in love.

“Do not bring us to hard testing, but keep us safe from the Evil One.’” Matthew 6:12 (GNT).

Father, thank you for never alluring us with sin, but for sending your Son Jesus to earth to destroy the works of the devil. We pray for protection against the spiritual forces that battle against our nation. We pray for deliverance against powers of darkness that seek to steal, kill and destroy. Keep us safe in the destiny you have purposed for this land and its people, created in your image with a unique calling for your glory.
