State of the Bible 2022 Report Reveals New Ways to Pray for America

Join us as we pray for Americans to turn to the Bible for comfort and guidance

American Bible Society just released the 12th annual State of the Bible report which highlights the latest Scripture engagement and spirituality trends in America.

And the results are striking.

The report shows that millions of Americans have disengaged from the Bible in the past 12 months. In every study since 2018, Bible Users have accounted for between 47 and 49 percent of American adults; however, the 2022 data shows a 10 percent decrease to 39 percent from April 2021.

While this news may seem disheartening, we see it as an opportunity. It’s an opportunity for church leaders and other Bible advocates to help people in their communities understand and apply Scripture. It’s an opportunity to remind Christians that when they face disruptions and difficulties from warfare, pandemic, heartache, and grief—they can look to the Bible for wisdom, guidance, and a right perspective. And it’s an opportunity to pray—pray that Americans will deepen their relationship with Jesus through his Word.

How You Can Pray for Americans

The past two years have brought a lot of pain, instability, and challenges for Americans. God’s Word offers the comfort and strength they need to heal. Now is the time to point them to the timeless truths found in the Bible. So, we invite you to join us as we pray in response to the data in this report. Pray for:

  • Churches. Pray that churches and church leaders will recognize this unique moment when many Christians are struggling to live out their faith after their lives have been upended by the pandemic. Pray that church leaders will respond with focus and creativity, and that they will work to reconnect people to Christ-centered relationships and service.
  • Christians who are struggling. Pray that they will find or return to a faith-based community that will support and encourage them as they process pain and grief. Pray that the Holy Spirit will lead them back to God’s Word which brings freedom, healing, and help.
  • Non-Bible users. Pray for non-Bible users who indicated that they had some curiosity in what the Bible has to say to them. Pray that they will explore the beauty of Scripture either through invitation or on their own and that God will speak to them through his Word.
