Following weeks of heavy rain, a humanitarian crisis has engulfed Pakistan as much of the nation is experiencing the worst flood in recorded history.

Torrential rains have submerged homes, roads, bridges, and crops. To date, more than 1,130 people have been killed since Pakistan’s monsoon season began in June. Destruction from this deadly flooding is now estimated at $10 billion in damages along with over 1 million homes destroyed across the country.

Our hearts break for those suffering across Pakistan as they face fear, uncertainty, displacement, and loss. Pakistan battles this natural disaster following a series of economic and political crises earlier this year—stoking additional worries for the future. Mounting political tensions create concerns that the nation is unprepared to deal with this unfolding crisis.

Yet, not all is grim news. Amid the flooding and challenges facing the country, a global movement of prayer is emerging for Pakistan. We join our hearts and prayers in response to this urgent plea from the Bible Society of Pakistan:

It’s a miserable situation due to the heavy flooding in rivers and lakes. This is the first time this has happened in the mountains in the southern part of the country. Due to the flood, 70 percent of the country is affected. Thousands of casualties have occurred, many cities and villages are under water. The people are spending time in open sky, they have nothing to eat and drink. Medicines are not available. Children are spending time without food and milk. It is a very bad situation. Scripture tells us, “The Lord is good; he protects his people in times of trouble; he takes care of those who turn to him” (Nahum 1:7 GNT). While the beautiful nation and people of Pakistan face one of the worst humanitarian crises in the country’s history, God’s Word offers hope. And it inspires our prayers today for protection, care, and provision for this hurting nation.

Here are 3 Ways to Pray:

• Pray for the wellbeing of Pakistanis who are suffering. Pray for God’s peace, comfort, and hope to restore the spirits of those crushed by the devastating floods affecting most of Pakistan. Pray for those mourning the loss of loved ones. Ask God to bring comfort to those who mourn and physical healing and safety to those displaced from their homes.
• Pray for urgent provision of humanitarian aid in Pakistan. Pray for wisdom over Pakistan’s regional and national governing authorities. Amid failing infrastructure and resource shortages, pray for a global outpouring of relief, aid, and provisions. Pray for governing bodies to unite with clear solutions to offer stability in this uncertain time. Ask God to provide all relief workers and urgent supplies needed, especially in difficult to access locations impacted by flooding. Pray for the provision of life-saving shelter, food, and medicines where needed most.
