Urgent: Pray as Typhoons Devastate the Philippines

Almighty God we cry out to you to comfort and help our Filipino brothers and sisters

This year’s typhoon season has hit the Philippines hard. Super typhoon Goni, the most powerful storm to hit since 2013, made landfall Nov. 1 on the island province of Catanduanes. Shortly after, typhoon Vamco made landfall Nov. 11 on the largest island, Luzon.

The damage is catastrophic. Dozens are dead, thousands of home and buildings are either damaged or destroyed, and most are still without power.

Torrential rains have caused the Cagayan River, one of the country’s longest and most beautiful rivers, to swell, swallowing nearby villages and setting off deadly landslides. According to the United Nations’ humanitarian office, the flooding has affected eight regions and three million people.

Filipinos are suffering. Many have lost everything. But we are reminded that God is merciful and always ready to help in times of trouble.

Praying for Filipinos

As the waters recede, Filipinos are dealing with the physical and emotional toll left by the storms. There is grief, trauma, anger, and fear. To address the spiritual needs of Filipino survivors, Philippine Bible Society hopes to provide the comfort found in God’s Word. Through an initiative called “We Care!” they will provide 40,000 copies of the Bible to displaced families in typhoon-torn towns in Catanduanes.

You can also offer support through your prayers. Your prayers invite God, the God of all comfort, to rescue those who are hurting. Let us call out to our merciful God to heal, help, and bring hope to suffering Filipinos.

3 Ways You Can Pray

Pray for:

  • Filipinos. Ask God to comfort them as they grieve tremendous loss. Pray for God’s peace to fill their hearts as they grapple with an uncertain future.
  • Government and NGOs. Ask God to make their efforts successful as they work round the clock to rescue families and individuals severely affected by the typhoons.
  • Philippine Bible Society. Ask God to give them strength, endurance, and encouragement as they collaborate with local churches to distribute God’s Word and emergency essentials. Pray for the staff who have also been directly affected by the floods. Many have had to evacuate their homes.

You can help hurting people find comfort and hope in God’s Word during one of the most desperate times in their lives. Help us bring God’s Word to victims of the typhoons in the Philippines.
