Urgent: Pray for Myanmar Facing Military Coup

Pray for God’s Word to bring hope as Myanmar faces increasing instability, violence, and suffering.

On February 1, 2021, Myanmar’s military overthrew the country’s civilian government. A decade-long era of fragile, budding democracy was overturned as the military took control of the nation and declared a year-long state of emergency. National events triggered increasing violence and despair across the country now facing worsening conditions. Dissenting nationals have been arrested in protest, with over 4,409 in detention and over 800 killed. Rising instability is leading to a shortage of cash, rising consumer prices, and lack of access to basic necessities, stoking fear for the future along with increased looting and chaos.

Prayer for Bible Ministry in Myanmar

While the nation grapples in turmoil, we are reminded of God’s great love for the 54 million people of Myanmar representing 130 ethnic groups that make up this beautiful, diverse nation. This majority Buddhist country (representing 85% of the population) has few Christians. Since 1889, the Bible Society of Myanmar has worked to make Scripture available to all people in Myanmar, through Bible translation, publishing, and distribution. In partnership with churches and Bible agencies, this movement has translated God’s Word into over 80 languages in Myanmar and over 200 languages around the world.

In partnership with the Golden Shores Initiative, our prayer community is invited to pray for this beautiful nation as an alliance of missional agencies seeks to bring the message of Jesus to every person in Myanmar. Alongside this network of organizations, join us in praying for Myanmar through this interactive prayer guide. Let us pray for God’s Word to bring the message of Christ’s love to every person across this nation.

Let’s Pray Together

Father, as we see the suffering of millions in Myanmar, we cry out with the words of Isaiah, “Why don’t you tear the sky open and come down? … No one has ever seen or heard of a God like you, who does such deeds for those who put their hope in him” (Isaiah 64:1,4 GNT). We pray for protection for the people of Myanmar. May armed conflict cease. We pray for righteous governance to be established, leading to peace and stability in this nation. May your Word bring hope and transformation to millions across the nation, reaching every state, city, and community with the love of Jesus. Amen.
