Urgent Prayer Needed: Join Us in Prayer for Ukraine at War

Let’s pray fervently for the people of Ukraine as this nation faces Russian invasion

In what is described as Europe’s darkest hour since World War II, the watching world reels in shock as Russia has invaded Ukraine. On February 24, Russian forces launched an assault by land, air, and sea—shifting the mounting speculation to reality as numerous Ukrainian locations have been hit by missiles and long-range artillery.

Shock waves are hitting governments and markets around the world, and the people of Ukraine face dire circumstances: chaos and casualties due to military conflict, massive displacement of people, humanitarian needs, and the independence of the nation.

Praying for Bible Ministry in Ukraine

In the face of many unknowns, Ukrainians are flocking to the streets to pray. We join them and others around the world who are praying for swift resolution to this conflict.

We also ask that you pray for and alongside our friends at the Ukrainian Bible Society, an organization serving Ukrainian churches that have been fasting and praying for God’s Word to guide the nation through this dark time.

The Ukrainian Bible Society, invites us to join them in praying for peace and gospel witness. “It’s trauma healing to my heart to share my burden with you and know you will pray,” the General Secretary says. “I feel lighter just talking with you, just knowing our brothers and sisters in the United States will be praying for us and for peace.”

The Ukrainian Bible Society has remained faithful to its mission through the last eight years of ongoing conflict. They pray alongside Bible ministry colleagues in Russia, who stand united in pointing all people to God’s Word for hope in these difficult times. The Ukrainian Bible Society seeks to meet the needs of the hurting, providing Scriptures to churches leaders distributing them freely to those searching for peace.

Church leaders recently flocked to the Bible Society store in Kyiv for Scriptures; however, demand is so high that the Bible Society ran out of inventory. Our Ukrainian brothers and sisters boldly seek to minister amid one of the greatest challenges of their lifetime—facing a nation at war and an unknown future.

Together, we pray alongside the Bible Society’s message of hope to Ukrainians from Psalm 31:21 (ESV), “Blessed be the LORD, for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me when I was in a besieged city.”

3 Ways You Can Pray

1. Pray for God’s love to reach those hurting across Ukraine: Pray that God’s Word will be made available, offering comfort, peace, and hope to Ukrainian people who are beloved of God. Pray for courage, strength, and perseverance for the people of Ukraine facing crisis. As nearly 70 percent of the Ukrainian population identifies as Christian, pray for believers share the good news of the kingdom with those yet to receive the gospel message.

Pray for God’s perfect peace and love to fill hearts, reflecting 1 John 4:18a (GNT): “There is no fear in love; perfect love drives out all fear.”

2. Pray for the Bible Societies of Ukraine and Russia. Praise God that Ukrainian Bible Society staff are safe; please pray for their continued safety. Pray as they faithfully serve Ukraine’s churches and its people. Ask God to bless their holistic, Scripture-led, trauma healing approach to Bible ministry that brings communities together to find healing in God’s Word. Pray for the provision of Bibles and other resources, training tools, and the means for God’s Word to advance even and especially through this conflict. Pray as well for God to guide the Russian Bible Society as they offer Bibles and other literature to hurting communities. May God’s Word be a source of hope for these nations.

Pray for the Bible Societies to be a conduit of God’s Word to those in need, considering this truth in Isaiah 55:11 (CEV): “That’s how it is with my words. They don’t return to me without doing everything I send them to do.”

3. Pray for wisdom for leaders. Pray that God would intervene in the hearts and minds of government leaders across Ukraine and Russia to lead them toward a path of peace. Pray for solutions that can bring a speedy end to the war and for protection against loss of life. Ask for God’s wisdom for world leaders seeking to strategize steps forward and that humanitarian aid and guidance would come quickly to those in need. Pray for guidance for church leaders as they minister to communities navigating crisis.

Pray that governmental leaders making decisions will be led by God’s wisdom, as 1 Timothy 2:1–4 (GNT) instructs, “First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, requests, and thanksgivings be offered to God for all people; for kings and all others who are in authority, that we may live a quiet and peaceful life with all reverence toward God and with proper conduct. This is good and it pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to come to know the truth.”
