The war in Ukraine has resulted in unthinkable suffering that has left deep scars on the hearts of an entire generation of children. Many had already suffered through poverty and abuse. Continued attacks have left towns destroyed and occupants without power, food, water, or medical aid. Children are struggling to survive with grave injuries to their bodies and deep trauma in their hearts.

The Bible Society began hosting children’s camps in a relatively safe region of Ukraine to bring Bible-based trauma healing to children devastated by war. Inna*, the Ukraine Bible Society Trauma Healing Manager, shared the experiences of some of the children who attended. Katia* had suffered sexual abuse before the war and would often harm herself to cope with the pain. After her town was destroyed, she saw the bodies of friends and neighbors left decaying in the streets for weeks on end. After much prayer and counseling, Katia gave her life to Jesus and her deeply wounded heart is beginning to heal.

Mykola*, age 10, was born to an alcoholic mother, which caused him to have severe emotional and developmental issues. Enduring the horror of his town’s destruction, he witnessed death all around and went days without food. But, Inna shares, “God worked a miracle!” Through love and prayer, Mykola began to show signs of healing.

Some children were transported over 30 hours to attend camp. Each child was made to feel safe and loved, and they received children’s Bibles and “Survival Kit” care packages to help them continue in their walk of faith and healing.
