Providing God’s Word for School Children in Macedonia

Religious education opens the door to reaching children with Scripture.

Sofia* knows what it’s like to struggle. Poverty has spread through her home country of Macedonia since it gained independence almost 30 years ago.

In one of the poorest countries in Eastern Europe, it’s often children like Sofia who suffer most. Lack of access to basic necessities, such as food, health care, and education, not only affect them today, but also affect their ability to thrive and escape poverty in the future.

Children need the hope found in Scripture. Thankfully, the Macedonian government introduced religious education in schools, providing a great opportunity to reach children with the promises found in God’s Word.

Before receiving her Bible, 15-year-old Sofia was impatient and regularly acted out. But that changed the moment she had access to God’s Word. “It was my first Bible, and it touched my heart. The Bible has had a great influence in my life because I am calmer and more patient than before. I feel God’s presence.”

American Bible Society’s financial partners are helping place First Bibles into the eager hands and hearts of poverty-stricken children in Macedonia, providing them comfort and hope for a brighter future. “The Bible makes me closer to Jesus,” Sofia says.

The faithful support of our financial partners helps provide the opportunity for thousands of children, adults, and even entire families to discover more about God’s Word!
