Ivan* really didn’t know anyone cared. How would he?

Born in a poverty-ridden country of Eastern Europe, Ivan’s parents didn’t care enough to meet his needs. He never had enough to eat, and his father often used what little resources they had to get drunk. The child’s earliest memories are of being hungry.

When he was just shy of 4 years old, Ivan was taken from his parents and placed in an orphanage for his protection. Yet still, he recalls, “I felt very lonely.”

Ivan is just one of the many children around the world who feel unloved and unwanted. They are victims of extreme poverty, political turmoil, natural disasters, and crises. Thankfully, friends of American Bible Society cared enough to provide Ivan with Scripture.

“I first heard about Jesus at age 4. When I was 7, I began to read the Bible by myself. First, it was the Children’s Bible, then the full Bible,” Ivan says. “Now that I am 12, I have given my life to Jesus.”

The Bibles you share with children like Ivan across the globe introduce them to a Heavenly Father who loves and cares for them.

“The Bible has become my favorite book,” says Ivan. “Many changes came over me. I am no longer shy; I made many friends with boys my age. I have goals in my life, and I always seek to understand others.” Ivan continues, “I love Jesus and I know that He helps all people, both adults and children. I always come to Him with prayer, and I know that He hears me.”

Children like Ivan who are living in poverty and hopelessness around the world need the hope of Scripture.
