Ukrainians Are Hungry to Know God
“People started turning to God.”
Alina* grew up with her mother, a devout Orthodox Christian, and her father, a hardened atheist. As an adult with grown children of her own, Alina was not interested in religion of any kind. But then, the horrors of war came to her doorstep in Kyiv, Ukraine.
Since the Russian invasion began on February 24, 2022, the Ukrainian people have seen their homes, schools, businesses, and churches destroyed. They’ve lost family and friends in relentless bombings and attacks. People who have never been to church before, and have never heard about the Bible, are desperate to find peace and hope.
For Alina, memories of things taught by her mother began to flood her thoughts. She found her mother’s old Slavonic Bible packed away but struggled to understand the outdated language. Alina asked several of her neighbors if they had any copies they could share, but, she said, “No one had a Bible.”
When Alina heard that a local church was helping displaced families, she went there hoping to receive some food. “I received so much more than that,” she says. “I discovered that I could have the Bible — for free!”
Alina began attending that church and spent time reading her new Bible. Now, Alina knows the only source of true hope and peace is Jesus! She rejoices that, even in the midst of devastating war, other Ukrainians are also hungry to know God.
