The loss of a beloved spouse is an earth-shaking tragedy for anyone, but for many widows in India like Sarika*, the grief is made only more painful due to social rejection from others.

“I felt empty and sad,” Sarika says. “Nobody was looking after me anymore. I also could not count on my family anymore. You will no longer receive any respect as a widow.”

After the passing of her husband, Sarika worked continuously to keep herself and her children afloat. She struggled with the emotional turmoil of losing her husband and the loneliness of being a widow in her town.

But our generous partners gifted Sarika her own Bible, and in it, Sarika found strength!

Now, she gathers with other widows to read Scripture and connect with God’s Word. She says, “Sometimes there are 50 women in our church. We read the Bible together, and we comfort each other.”

Sarika finds comfort in the Bible at home as well as at her church. “I would like to be able to read the Bible myself, but I cannot. I ask my daughters to read. I also like to hold the Bible. Then I feel strong.”

Sarika says, “Faith gives me comfort and guidance. Sometimes I even forget the sadness completely.” We are so grateful to our financial partners for giving women like Sarika healing and strength.
