Liana’s Favorite Books: Episode 17

Explore the first Bible printed in New York!

In this episode of “Liana’s Favorite Books,” Dr. Liana Lupas takes you on a tour of the first English Bible printed in New York.

In 1782, Robert Aitken printed the English Bible in Philadelphia. He struggled to sell all 10,000 copies, and the endeavor nearly bankrupt him. Ten years later, two printers named Hodge and Campbell solicited subscriptions for a large folio Bible, which was printed in 40 parts. Each part cost 25 cents, and subscribers had their name added to a long list that was included with the last section of the Bible. The subscription list included President George Washington, along with three future American Bible Society officers!

In total, 1,300 people subscribed to this unique folio Bible, which was especially successful among middle-class Americans. The Bible included notes to help the average reader understand Scripture and iconography related to values like justice and liberty.

We hope you enjoy exploring this early American treasure!
