Praying for Cities Amid Growing Violence

Join us as we pray for God’s presence to be felt in every city

As civil unrest, political divisions, and mass shootings erupt in cities across America, we find ourselves on our knees in prayer. We are reminded that we need something bigger and more powerful than social, political, and economic reform. We need God!

God can transform our cities. He has the power to change the spiritual atmosphere from one filled with violence and hate to one of forgiveness and love. He can transform leaders, governments, and communities. Nothing is too hard for him!

So, let’s lean into God’s Word to remind us of his compassion for cities. And let’s have faith that our united prayer will bring about God’s healing for cities around the world.

4 Ways to Pray for Cities

  1. Pray for God’s presence. Invite God into your city, home, school, business, and community.
“As a deer longs for a stream of cool water, so I long for you, O God.” Psalm 42:1 (GNTD)
  2. Pray for protection. Ask God to protect the citizens in your city. Pray against a spirit of violence.
“Protect me, Lord, from the power of the wicked; keep me safe from violent people who plot my downfall.” Psalm 140:4 (GNTD)
  3. Pray for leaders and authorities. Ask God to guide all those in positions of authority. Pray that they lead by biblical principles.
“Be smart, all you rulers, and pay close attention. Serve and honor the Lord; be glad and tremble.” Psalm 2:10–11 (CEV)
  4. Pray for the churches. Pray for spiritual awakening in every church. Ask God to empower believers to boldly share his gospel.
“But the Holy Spirit will come upon you and give you power. Then you will tell everyone about me in Jerusalem, in all Judea, in Samaria, and everywhere in the world.” Acts 1:8 (CEV)

How We’re Serving Cities

Through the generous prayers and support of our partners, American Bible Society equips local churches and communities to share Scripture with those who need it. God’s Word is being shared in Philadelphia, New York, Charlotte, Kansas, and many other cities. We thank God for his transformative power and for working in hearts across our nation.
